Can LASIK Correct Astigmatism?
A common misconception about LASIK surgery is that it can’t be performed if you have astigmatism. While this used to be true of traditional LASIK, technological advances in laser vision correction have allowed for astigmatism to be corrected by LASIK.
All issues that can be corrected by LASIK surgery involve a refractive disorder of the cornea. In the case of astigmatism, you may have blurred vision from any distance. Oftentimes, this blurriness can cause your eyes to become tired and strained.
The blurred vision arises from your cornea being irregularly shaped, causing the light that enters your eye to scatter, rather than enter in a solid stream. This scattering of light causes the symptoms of astigmatism.
If you’d like to treat your astigmatism with LASIK eye surgery, our team uses top-of-the-line technology to do the procedure.
Our team uses iLASIK technology, which is a completely bladeless system consisting of the following:
- Intralase™ – laser used to cut the corneal flap
- CustomVue™ – creates a 3D map of your eyes and where they need to be corrected
- VISX Star S4™ Laser – tracks your eye during surgery, so small movements don’t affect the surgery
